The Handmaid's Tale

In a dystopian near-future, the totalitarian and Christian-fundamentalist government of Gilead rules the former United States amidst an ongoing civil war and subjugates women, who are not allowed to work, control money, or even read. Widespread infertility due to environmental contamination has resulted in the conscription of young fertile women—called Handmaids, according to biblical precedent—who are assigned to the homes of the elite, where they must have ritualized sex with the men in order to become pregnant and bear children for those men and their wives. The main character, Offred, is the Handmaid assigned to an elite Commander and his wife, and as such is subject to the strictest rules and constant scrutiny; an improper word or deed on her part can lead to her execution. Offred, so named because her master is named Fred, can remember the “time before”, when she was married.

Downton Abbey - the movie - update

Here are a few of the latest on the Movie from around the web today....

Dame Maggie Smith thinks a Downton Abbey film would start with the Dowager Countess' funeral

"I could croak it."

The cast of Downton Abbey series six

There's been talk of a Downton Abbey film for years, if only Julian Fellowes could get on with it, and Dame Maggie Smith reckons she knows how the film will start if it does actually happen.

But it's not particularly good news for the Dowager Countess, as Dame Maggie thinks her character's death would be the event that sets the film in motion.

"I was firmly convinced it would start with the funeral," she said during today's (April 8) BFI & Radio Times Television Festival.
Comparing it to the start of Evelyn Waugh's Brideshead Revisited, the actress continued to suggest that the Dowager could come home to die as Lord Marchmain does in the novel.
"I thought it would be a bit like that," she said. "I could croak it. It would just start with the body. But I don't know.
"They talk about there being a film, but who knows? Who knows."

With Fellowes himself recently saying he's very pro-Downton movie and further reports adding that a script has been written and the cast have all seen it, it seems like Dame Maggie Smith could be the only cast member who doesn't think a Downton Abbey movie would be a good thing.
"I just think it's squeezing it dry, do you know what I mean?" she added. "I don't know what it could possibly be. It was so meandering, what would you - ?
"Anyway that's not my problem. That's the Lord's [Julian Fellowes] problem."
And it's a problem he may have already solved too, as Mr Carson actor Jim Carter recently revealed that the cast have all been asked to keep certain dates clear for filming in the future.
Downton Abbey ended its very successful run after six series on Christmas Day 2015.

It looks as if those plans for a Downton Abbey movie are coming to fruition. The show finished its televised run on Christmas Day 2015, and a movie revival looks to be coming together at pace.

Back in January, rumours were fuelled by Jim Carter (Top Secret!), who played Carson in the TV show. He told Good Morning Britain that “we’ve been asked to keep ourselves available for dates in the future, but nobody has seen a script”.
Today, CultBox has shared an update from a PR representative of Jeremy Swift (who played Spratt in the show). "Jeremy has also been asked to keep the end of this year free as the Downton movie will begin filming", the unnamed PR bod revealed. So it looks like the Downton movie will start shooting late this year.
Additionally, a fresh source recently told the RT that "the financing ducks are being lined up very nicely", and that the formal confirmation of the movie could be "imminent".
Hugh Bonnevile, Dame Maggie Smith, Michelle Dockery, Laura Carmichael and Lily James are all expected to join Jim Carter in the cast, although no story details have thus far been revealed.  We’ll keep you posted as we hear more…

and finally,

‘Downton Abbey’ movie will begin filming at ‘the end of this year’

It looks production is finally gearing up for the long-awaited Downton Abbey film.
Rumours surrounding the movie have been going around for over a year now, with a production source announcing in January that “the financing ducks are being lined up very nicely.”
A PR representative for actor Jeremy Swift, who played Spratt in the final three seasons of Downton Abbey, recently revealed: “Jeremy has also been asked to keep the end of this year free as the Downton movie will begin filming.”

Swift has been filming Mary Poppins Returns in London with Emily Blunt, Colin Firth and Meryl Streep, and released his debut album, ‘Everything’s A Joke’, last month.
Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes previously explained the reasons behind the delay: “The thing about Downton is we have a lot of running characters and we really do need them for the movie, so you can imagine at the end of the show they all shot off into shows on Broadway, series in LA, things on television… and they somehow have to gradually be coaxed back into the fold.”

The final episode of Downton Abbey aired on Christmas Day in 2015 on ITV.
Fellowes has claimed that “most of the cast are up for [the movie].”
Dame Maggie Smith has reportedly signed on to return as Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham, and Michelle Dockery, who played Lady Mary, revealed last year that she would “wholeheartedly consider” appearing. Joanne Froggatt (Anna Bates) has said she is “98% per cent sure it will happen”, Penelope Wilton (Isobel Crawley) says “it would be silly not to say yes” and Laura Carmichael (Lady Edith) is also keen to return. Jim Carter, who played Mr Carson, previously let slip that the cast have been asked to keep certain dates clear in their schedule.
