The Halcyon

ITVEight-part drama series about a bustling and glamorous grand hotel in wartime London.

Series overview
Two of the UK’s most acclaimed actors, Steven Mackintosh (Luther, The Sweeney, Inside Men) and Olivia Williams (Anna Karenina, Hyde Park On Hudson, The Sixth Sense) join forces in a brand new ITV drama series, The Halcyon.
The Halcyon tells the story of a bustling and glamorous five star hotel at the centre of London society and a world at war. The eight-part drama series also features Kara Tointon (Mr Selfridge, Sound Of Music Live), Alex Jennings (The Lady In The Van, The Queen), Matt Ryan (Constantine, Arrow), Hermione Corfield (Knights Of The Roundtable: King Arthur, Pride and Prejudice And Zombies) and Mark Benton (Eddie The Eagle, Waterloo Road).

The drama, set in 1940, shows London life through the prism of war and the impact it has on families, politics, relationships and work across every social strata with a soundtrack of music from the era.

Episode 1

Season 01, Episode 01
The Halcyon’s owner Lord Hamilton holds a secret meeting that attracts the interest of American guest Joe O’Hara, while manager Richard Garland must deal with the arrival of Lady Hamilton a day earlier than expected.

Episode 2

Season 01, Episode 02
Lady Hamilton wants to make changes and Garland is in her sights. The hotel manager insists he’s not worried and that he just needs to show how indispensable he is, but Peggy and Feldman aren’t so sure. Charity meets Joe and reveals her plans for revenge, but he refuses to help her. Emma and Betsey hit the town.

Episode 3

Season 01, Episode 03
In the wake of the fall of France to the Germans, guests flood into the hotel, including one who catches Lady Hamilton’s eye – the Comte de St Claire. Peggy worries about Billy’s enthusiasm to sign up as soon as he turns 18, but knows there is little she can do to protect him when his mind looks like it’s made up to join his father’s regiment, infamously used as canon fodder. When Max faces hostility from the staff, Emma goes out on a limb to defend him – and immediately regrets it.

Episode 4

Season 01, Episode 04
Joe is offered the opportunity of a lifetime, but finds himself unexpectedly torn as the moral responsibility of staying in England to tell the story of the war weighs heavily on his shoulders. Betsey’s mother comes for a surprise stay, leaving Sonny unsettled and wary of the reaction she incites from Betsey, while Lucian and Lady Hamilton continue their flirtation and Emma anxiously awaits news of Freddie when she hears that a plane from Squadron 392 has gone down.

Episode 5

Season 01, Episode 05
We begin with a flashback: Three soldiers stumble through a forest in France. One is blindfolded, with his hands behind his back. One leads him, talking about how he hates a coward, and raising his gun. The third is Garland, younger and in uniform, watching this in silent dread. As the officer goes to shoot, Garland raises his own gun and wakes up, in present day, disturbed and restless. Emma enters his office, busying – there’s a wedding today, and she’s holding the fort while Garland goes to the East End to help Peggy with some housekeeping. Garland’s reluctant, but Emma’s firm – he needs a day off. He’s not the only one: Robbie notices Max is in low spirits: not engaged and flat with life.

Season 01, Episode 06
Joe is curious about Emma’s work for the Women’s Voluntary Service, Toby is worried sick after hearing a bomb fell on a shelter in Adil’s neighbourhood, and Lucian offers Lady Hamilton emotional support.

Episode 7

Season 01, Episode 07
Garland asks Emma to take over running the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the hotel, and Betsey catches the eye of a handsome man in the bar. Meanwhile MI5 officers arrive with a warrant to search the premises.

Episode 8

Season 01, Episode 08
The hotel celebrates its 50 year anniversary, but Lucian struggles to keep things in order as pressure mounts and Adil attempts to corner Toby and bring him back from the edge of doing something terrible. Garland and Lady Hamilton find a cause to unite over, while Emma is still confused about the men in her life and finally comes to a decision after talking to Betsey about love during wartime. The tension between Joe and Freddie is palpable: will it spill over?

  12. I just loved being able to see Downton Abbey, Poldark, Victoria, and now Halcyon. Rewatching Victoria on PBS. Seemed to me the second go around skipped parts, but that just might be being in my sixties. Watched the second episode of Halcyon early this morning. Can't wait for #3.

  13. "The Halcyon" is quickly growing on me. I'm thoroughly enjoying the mix of the Downton Abbeyish elite and history with the fun and elegance of Selfridge. The era is depicted to perfection. Thank you, June, for bringing it straight to us this side of the pond.
