The Queen falls for Albert

Well, Albert, you took your time, mate. Four episodes into ITV's Victoria and the man the history books tell us is destined to be the love of  the Queen's life finally decides to show up.
Of course, while the young bachelor has been dawdling over from Germany, Vicky (Jenna Coleman) has given her heart to dashing Lord Melbourne (Rufus Sewell) – and now he's lurking in the background, looking less than thrilled when the two potential spouses meet for the first time since they were children.
It's not exactly an auspicious introduction, either. Albert (Tom Hughes) is stiff, rude and, well, not Rufus Sewell. He's also overshadowed by his suave older brother Ernest (David Oakes), who was clearly paying attention in lessons on how to talk to a queen, while little brother was looking down at the floor (which he does a lot).

Dear me, how on earth are the scriptwriters going to get these two pesky kids betrothed by the end of the episode?
It seems we're going the Mills & Boon route of furtive glances and unsubtle moments (Gosh, they play piano well together and hasn't Albert got big, strong hands on the keys in this close-up?).
But the path of true love can never run too smooth. First, he has to be awkward and insulting and she has to appear to be be annoyed, but be secretly thrilled there's now a man in her life more available than Lord M – even if he is her cousin. Ick.
The episode's below stairs drama is rather forgettable (Miss Skerrett's secret is sort of revealed), but this week's Victoria romps along upstairs, packed with the enjoyably odd mating rituals of royals.

Albert corrects Victoria's behaviour, she shows him who's boss by way of dinner time etiquette, but a shared waltz finally sets them on the road to an unlikely romance.
It helps that she is wearing a flower (given by Lord Melbourne) that reminds Albert of his mother and when Victoria hands it to him, he slashes his shirt so he can wear it close to his chest. Ooo-errr. So Lord M gives her a token and she gives it to Albert. Clumsy symbolism alert!
Deciding that she now wants Albert to be her prince, Victoria and her entourage decamp to Windsor Castle to show him the countryside (he likes trees, apparently). So we get a walk in the woods with some rather hilarious slow-motion jogging – so they can both look tousled and pant at each other...

...until, this is, poor dog Dash breaks his leg and the lovebirds end up arguing over Melbourne's influence and the crown's treatment of the poor (forgetting the injured pooch lying at their feet in the process).
With the feisty pair at odds once more, it's up to Lord Melbourne to do the gallant thing and let Albert know that he won't be Victoria's political advisor for much longer, leaving the way clear for the prince to be the only moody man in her life.
With five minutes of the episode to go and Victoria wearing those flowers again (ewww – is she really appealing to Albert's mummy issues?), she proposes, the pair kiss, and viewers everywhere pray that Albert gets a lot more interesting between now and the next episode.
Failing that, could the screenwriters invent a completely fictional affair between Lord M and Victoria... just for our entertainment?
