Downton Abbey Season SIX - sneak peek

Brace yourselves, Downton fans. ITV dropped the first trailer for the sixth and final season of Downton Abbey Saturday and announced that the season will premiere in the U.K. Sept. 20.

The one-minute clip previews the farewell season, but doesn’t give away too many details. We hear Robert Crawley (Hugh Bonneville) tell Mr. Carson (Jim Carter), “If I could stop history in its tracks, maybe I would. But I can’t, Carson, for neither you nor I can hold back time.” Foreboding! It was also previously announced that Downton will pick up in 1925, six months after season 5’s finale.

After announcing the show would end after season 6, executive producer Gareth Neame explained the decision. “We wanted to leave them with wanting more, leave while the show is in really robust health and a year or two earlier than you might expect just so you can be sure to maintain the quality of the work,” he said. “And hopefully people will look back on what was a well-formed show, and not say what people often say, which is ‘Well, it was a great show, but it ran out of steam.’”

  7. It didn't run out of steam. It was just getting started. So sad when great shows get taken off the air.

  8. I'm glad I'm not the only person who was moved by watching this. I kept telling myself that I wouldn't miss it and that at least we get one more season. Season 5 wasn't my favorite but watching this - I can't believe this is ending. It will seriously be like saying good-bye to a group of very near and dear friends. I will have to imagine how their lives unfold past the "fade to black" of the final episode! In my world, Mr. Bates and Anna will live happily ever after with no more pain or tears. Thank you so much for posting this!
