Mr. Selfridge 3 - Episode 3

Mr Selfridge series 3 episode 3: Six things we learned from the latest instalment

This article below is from metro.co.uk and contains spoilers.
So we’re three episodes in and we can’t help but notice that this seems to be the darkest series of Mr Selfridge yet.
And the latest instalment did nothing to change our minds about that, as Harry’s housing project obsession took over, Lord Loxley’s scheming threatened to scale new heights and Henri’s demons began haunting him more than ever.
Here’s what we learned from this week’s show:

Mr Selfridge
Hands up everyone who wants to boo Lord Loxley right now (Picture: ITV)

1 Our main man managed to secure the land in Acton for his much-cherished housing project – but it came at a price, £30,000 to be precise – the amount he managed to secure as a loan from his personal bank. And why did it cost so much when he assured Gordon it would be half that amount? Well, we have Lord Loxley poking his nose in at the auction to thank for that. Somehow we sense we haven’t heard the last of this.
2 Henri attempted to shrug off his war trauma by throwing himself in to his work – really in to his work, to the extent of staying up all night working on designs for Selfridges’ biggest ever beauty event. The resulting window dressing might have been stunning but Agnes’ attempt to add a teeny bit more to the display – under Kitty’s orders – finally led Henri to snap as his flashbacks became even more intense.
3 But we’re began to get some idea of what he went through after Agnes visited Victor, who explained that her husband had been in Verdun, where thousands of soldiers had starved to death after supplies failed to get through. The fact that he stopped just short of going in to detail, instead pointing out to her he ‘had a club to run’ suggest Henri isn’t the only one who was left scarred by it all.

4 Things seem to be going well – very well in fact between Harry and Nancy Webb, whom he appointed manager of his housing project – and with whom he is now on first name terms. It remains to be seen of course whether the whole thing will push them closer together – but it wouldn’t be an entirely surprising plot twist. And he isn’t the only Selfridge who’s been charming the ladies after Gordon made Grace know just how pleased he was with her appointment as head of accessories. Right down to suggesting they go out and celebrate. Steady now.

5 Meanwhile it all got steadily worse for Henri after he overheard Agnes confiding in Miss Mardle over how much he had changed, to the extent that he now ‘frightens’ his own wife. We sense this plotline is going to run and run.
6 And what started out as a fabulous day for Kitty – after she persuaded Mr Selfridge to give her sister Connie a job – soon took a very different turn after she was confronted by homeless ex-servicemen Charlie and Silas, begging outside the store after spilling all their resentments about the war to her husband (while getting them very drunk in the process) as research for his new book.
The poor girl attempted to fight back but things quickly got a lot worse for her – and only Harry’s sudden intervention saved her from a much more serious assault. We wait with bated breath to see how this one develops…
