Downton Abbey 4 - Episode 3

Due to the high volume of traffic, these videos may quickly exceeded the allowed number of playbacks.  If you receive this message - first try clicking DISMISS - sometimes that will reset it.  Otherwise, be patient  it can take up to 24 hours for the video to become available again. You are welcome to check back during that time as we are hoping to rotate the versions we have but those have been overloading withing 20 minutes or so of posting them.

 SPOILERS **

Always prepared to up the ante and upset the applecart tonight’s episode of Downton Abbey was a shocking one as a terrible incident occured whilst the house was meant to be celebrating.
What happened in the house this week?Episode three of season four begins with the Abbey all aflutter as there is to be a party and Nellie Melba is to sing. Cars holding distinguished guests arrive at the house and we get our first glimpse of Lord Gillingham, an exciting new addition to the household who Lord Grantham calls a ‘handsome pirate’.
Lady Edith has invited her married lover Michael to get to know the family (but they ignore him) and Branson is finding it hard to ingratiate himself with the fine company with Violet Crawley worried he isn’t good enough at smalltalk. But he does manage to dance the two-step with a Duchess quite admirably while deflecting chat about his poor Irish roots.
But of course the major focus is on the dashing Lord G and the impression he is making upon widow Lady Mary, who he has been friends with since they were children. He manages to tempt her out for a spot of riding to which she readily agrees despite worrying about being ‘as stiff as a board the next day’. He gets her to open up about her marriage and gives her some advice about tax. Maybe the new Lord is just what Mary needs to get her back into the swing of things?
Isobel Crawley is none too happy about the gathering up at the big house as it feels a bit disrespectful so soon after Matthew’s death. Violet asks her to come and hear the singing and so she makes the effort but is still grieving terribly.
There is some ongoing shenanigans over a regular poker game between the men and Lord Grantham falls out with Samson, one of his guests, who everyone keeps losing to. Michael manages to make friends with the family by outwitting the card sharp and winning back everyone’s lost money.

I See Trouble Ahead – my weekly worries
Lord Gillingham’s valet Green makes himself at home downstairs but the cheeky persona hides a darker side as this rather unwelcome visitor forces himself upon Anna after finding her alone in the kitchen. The sounds of opera from upstairs drown out her screams as Green attacks her. Sadly Anna doesn’t want to report it because she knows Bates would get into trouble for killing him and she makes Mrs Hughes promise to keep it a secret. What impact will this have on their happy marriage?
Edna Braithwaite doesn’t do herself any favours by not agreeing to help Mrs Hughes out with the new guests. She has no time for extra work but has time to seek out Branson for a bit of illicit chat who admits to her he is feeling like a ‘fish out of water’ at the party. She is very happy with her secret knowledge but Branson is very unhappy and tries to tell his Lordship that he can’t be one of them. The one time chauffeur is struggling upstairs.

Dispatches from Downstairs – the servants digest
The ongoing saga of Molesley’s employment continues as it is revealed he is now delivering groceries as he turns up in the kitchen with an order. But Carson finds him some work as a footman due to the extra large amount of guests. Molesley admits he is living his career backwards.
Downstairs is in disarray over their increased workload, there is a frantic new card game to learn, Jimmy drops a jar of jam (try saying that five times over) and in an absolute state over the bechamel our beloved cook Mrs Patmore nearly has a heart attack.

Most Shocking Revelation – the weekly gasp!
Carson is appalled at the suggestion that Nellie Melba (Kiri Te Kanawa) should dine with the house party insisting that she take a tray in her room rather than eat upstairs – I mean you can’t have ‘an Australian singer’ dining with a Duchess can you? (It’s bad enough that the kitchen staff have been allowed to hear her sing). Disgusted to hear that the world famous singer is eating in her room Lady Crawley goes to fetch her and makes Lord Grantham sit next to the opera singer, he’s mightily relieved to discover she drinks claret.
Violet Crawley Speaks – the best quotes from the Countess
“If I was ever to search for logic, I should not look for it among the English upper class.”
“Don’t use me as an excuse. If you don’t want to dance, tell him.”
What’s Cooking? – coming up from the kitchen
Of course poor Mrs Patmore is thrown by catering for such a large party and there is some worry about the squabs,  the syllabub and the savoury. She also has cause to reprimand Daisy for using the wrong bowls for the chilled soup which should ‘be an exquisite mouthful not a bucket of slop’.

    2. Yeah, I am still in recovery from episode 3 as well. So sad. When Anna was talking to Bates later it just broke my heart. I wish she would just tell him what happened to her. At least mrs hughes knows. I wanted Mrs. Hughes to go beat the crap out of the guy....have Mrs. Pattmore take her fancy new mixer to his man parts.

    3. OMG. I would love to see Mrs. Hughes and Mrs. Pattmore take that guy out. It makes me sad though that she didn't go to her husband; He knows something happened and she won't tell him. I don't think Mr. Bates would kill that guy, he could go to Lord Grantham and have him arrested. Poor Anna!

  6. This episode was downright disturbing. Last week's episode was so lighthearted and fun. The twists in these week's episode were awful! And that snake, Edna! I really hope things didn't happen the way the preview for next week made it seem to look.

  7. It's so great to be able to see the new episodes of Downton, enjoying them so much, thanks a bunch! It was so hard to see Anna have to go through something so horrific and feel she can't tell her husband...I can only hope Mr. Green will pay for what he has done sometime later!

  25. Question 1: Is every video the same?
Question 2: The ones above say they were last updated on 10/06 and none of them are available. Do I just have to get up at 4am CST to watch them? I have been trying for WEEKS!

Having serious withdrawal...especially with my coworkers having already caught up and trying to talk about it over the cube walls!!! :-(
